PALEOPATHOLOGY ASSOCIATION
FOUNDED IN 1974
Summary
Cribra began to be registered in paleopathology at the end of the 19th century. Since then, numerous etiological mechanisms and interpretations have been proposed; however, a consensus remains elusive. The necessity for a comprehensive review and reflection prompted the organization of the Meeting on Porous Skeletal Lesions (PSL), held at the University of Coimbra on July 7th-8th 2023. In this webinar, we aim to provide an overview of our current understanding of PSL in terms of etiology and interpretations. Moreover, we will highlight the primary contributions from the PSLMeet, particularly the collaborative brainstorming that took place during the plenary session. Here, recommendations for the cribra’s recording were suggested as well as the establishment of three working groups – terminology, protocols for microCT, and pathophysiology. We will also explore the future directions for the development of this topic, including studies on identified individuals and the integration of clinical expertise.
